New studies

New studies showing Astaxanthin protects neuronal cells against oxidative damage, has effect on accommodation function and is also a potent candidate for brain food!!

1. The Effects of a Dietary Supplement Containing Astaxanthin on the Accommodation Function of the Eye in Middle-aged and Older People

Masayoshi Kajita, Hiroki Tsukahara, Mio Kato

The effects of a dietary supplement containing astaxanthin (AX) on the accommodation function and subjective symptoms of the eyes were investigated in 22 middle-aged and older people (mean age: 53.9 years) with complaints of eye strain. Astaxanthin was administered to subjects at a daily dose of 6 mg for 4 weeks, and the pupillary constriction ratio before and after AX supplementation was measured by TriIRIS C9000. The change in subjective symptoms after supplementation was examined by a questionnaire. The results showed a significant increase in pupillary constriction ratio after supplementation of AX, therefore suggesting that astaxanthin may also improve the accommodation function of the eye and some subjective symptoms related to presbyopia in middle-aged and older people with complaints of eye strain.

2. Effect of Astaxanthin Consumption on Superoxide Scavenging Activity in Aqueous Humor

We examined the effect of astaxanthin (AX) consumption on superoxide-scavenging activity (O2˚- activity)in aqueous humor. The subjects comprised 35 patients who were scheduled for cataract surgery on botheyes. Surgery on one eye was performed before AX consumption (for 2 weeks, 6 mg/day): surgery on the other eye was performed after AX consumption, and O2 activity (U/ml) was measured. Based on the presence of diabetes (DM), the subjects were classified into two groups, the non-DM group and the DMgroup: O2˚ activity and rate of change (%) were compared between the groups by sex. O2˚ activity was significantly increased by AX consumption in the DM group. Regarding differences by sex, O2˚ activitybefore AX consumption was significantly lower in males and increased significantly after AX consumptionin males. The rate of change was significantly high for males in the non-DM group.
