Eye
Good vision and eye health is a concern for both young and old. Working for long periods at Visual Display Terminals (VDT) reportedly induces various problems associated with eye fatigue (asthenopia). An increasing number of people work in front of these terminals several hours every day, thus increasing the number of reported cases. The symptoms of eye fatigue include; eye strain, irritation, sore and dry eyes, diplopia and frequent headaches.
A double blind randomized placebo controlled study carried out on Visual Display Terminal users (VDTs). Subjects that were supplemented orally with 5mg per day of astaxanthin for 4 weeks, reported a 46% reduction of eye strain and improved adjustment to near and far objects (accommodation amplitude).
At present, nine clinical studies have been performed, all showing positive effects of astaxanthin in mitigating the symptoms of eye fatigue.
